## History

A house built over vaulted cellars stood on the street here from about 1660. Its resident, Jean-Gabriel Le Bault (1705 to 1774), president of the Parlement de Bourgogne, had the present château built behind it in 1749. The estate later passed to the Marquis de Cordoue, who built the winery, and then to the Comtes de Grancey, whose name it still carries.

In 1891, in the middle of the phylloxera crisis that was destroying Burgundy's vines, the Grancey family sold the estate to Louis Latour. It has stayed with the Latour family ever since. For a long time the château was the family's summer residence. Today the house is used to receive guests of the firm and for special occasions.

## Architecture

The château has a central block framed by two lower wings with flat roofs and stone balustrades. The main block rises over a cellar and a sunken courtyard to two floors under a pavilion roof of flat tiles. The garden front has a long wrought-iron balcony, and a wooden oriel window projects from the north side. An 18th-century walled garden and a walled vineyard complete the estate.

## Visiting

The château is private and used by Louis Latour to receive guests, so there is no regular public tour. You can see the estate from the rue des Corton, a short walk from Château Corton C. For tastings of Louis Latour wines, check the official website before you go.

## Did you know?

Louis Latour describes its winery, built in the 1830s, as the first purpose-built winery in France. It works on five levels, so grapes and wine move by gravity.
