## History

The owners trace the site back to the 12th century, when the Duke of Burgundy ringed the powerful castle of Vergy with small forts; Entre-Deux-Monts may keep the only remains of them. From the 13th century it was a fortified farm, or grange, belonging to the dukes and worked by monks of Cîteaux. In the early 14th century the duke gave it to his steward, Pierre d'Épernay.

In 1564 Louis de Menessaire, short of money, sold the estate to Étienne Barbier. The Barbier family, later Barbier d'Entre-Deux-Monts and then Barbier de Reulle, kept it for nearly 300 years. Bernard Barbier, a master of accounts in Dijon, built the main house between 1641 and 1654. In 1856 the estate was sold to Louis Rocaut, and his descendants, the Postansque family, restored it from 1975.

## Architecture

The house has an H plan in the Louis XIII style, with a curved pediment bearing the Barbier arms. Its wings, built around 1530, link it to two square towers of the 15th century. One holds the chapel of Saint Gertrude, the other a round dovecote with 1,630 pottery nesting holes. Inside, a grand stone staircase rises in two flights, and two service stairs once held dumbwaiters.

## Did you know?

The estate also offers a truffle experience: after touring the château, you follow a trained dog hunting for truffles in the château's own truffle ground, then taste truffle dishes.
