## History

Beaumont was a fortified lordship on the Vingeanne, in a region long exposed to wars on the border with Franche-Comté. During the Ten Years War the old castle was taken and plundered on 18 January 1636, and the imperial army of Gallas passed through again that November, on its return from the siege of Saint-Jean-de-Losne. Beaumont lies about 7 km south of Fontaine-Française, where Henri IV had fought in 1595.

When peace returned, the fortifications along the Vingeanne lost their purpose, and in 1667 only part of the old building remained after a fire. The present château was built in the early 18th century, and the historic-monument record dates it to 1706. It was restored in 1936 and again from 1942, and the château and its park were classified in 1948. It now belongs to a private company.

## Architecture

The house is built into a slope, which gives it a garden level below the main floor. It stands on a vaulted basement about 20 by 15 metres, with a raised ground floor reached by front and back stairways and a mezzanine over the front half. This clever plan adds living space while keeping the reception rooms grand. The house is roofed with glazed tiles.

## Visiting

## Did you know?

The house hides a mezzanine behind its façade: a split-level plan that fits extra rooms into a small building without reducing the height of the formal reception rooms.
