## History

The château was built in the early 18th century in an elegant style with Italian influence, above gardens laid out in the French manner. Towards the end of that century a fire destroyed the chapel that adjoined the house. The towers that give Chamirey its present outline were built after this fire. The property then passed from the Dupaty de Clam family to the family of the Marquis de Jouennes d'Herville.

In 1934 the Marquis de Jouennes decided to bottle the wines of Chamirey at the estate itself, an early move at the time. His son-in-law, Bertrand Devillard, then enlarged the vineyard in the best sites of Mercurey to its present size of 37 hectares. Today Amaury and Aurore Devillard, the fifth generation of this Burgundian wine family, run the estate.

## Architecture

Chamirey is a classical country house rather than a fortress. Its main block dates from the early 18th century and has the calm symmetry of the period, with an Italian touch. The towers added at the end of the century give it a more castle-like outline on its spur. Gardens in the French style spread below the house, and the historic 18th-century vat house is where visitors are received today.
