# Château de Chasselas

> Château de Chasselas: a three-towered castle with glazed-tile roofs in the Saint-Véran hills, long the heart of a wine estate.

Château de Chasselas is in Chasselas (Saône-et-Loire), 1 h 19 by road (109 km) from Beaune. Private, seen from outside · 14th to 18th century · Private driver from Beaune: €285 one way for the whole car, up to 4 guests.

The château of Chasselas stands on a slope above its village in the Saint-Véran country, south-west of Mâcon. Three pepper-pot towers roofed with glazed tiles frame a wide courtyard of honour. For decades it was a wine estate with its own tasting cellar, and its vines are now farmed by the Burgundy house of Joseph Drouhin.

## History

In the early 13th century the land belonged to the Chasselas family. The du Roux family held it from the 15th century, and its last heiress, Judith du Roux, married first a Protestant beheaded for banditry at Trévoux and then Philibert de Bellecombe, lord of Vinzelles. In 1629 her son Jacques and his wife died of the plague, and in 1654 their son Claude was murdered.

The Bellecombe family sold the run-down château in 1706, and it then passed through several indebted owners. In 1774 it went to a creditor, Étienne Cellard d'Estours. His son could not prevent the looting of 1789 and the demolition of one tower, but he kept the rest. In 1971 the Reme family bought the abandoned château and devoted great energy to restoring it.

## Architecture

Buildings surround a rectangular courtyard entered from the north through a narrow passage between outbuildings. The 16th-century lodging stands to the east, with a round tower nearby at the corner of the kitchen garden. Another tower guards the north-west corner, linked to a third by farm buildings. The main house on the south dates from the late 18th century, with a central block between two wings.

## Visiting

The château is private, and its website states that the estate is closed to the public for works. Its vineyards are now run by Maison Joseph Drouhin. The Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé villages around Chasselas offer many other cellars for tastings. Check the official website for any news of a reopening.

## Did you know?

The arms of Étienne Cellard d'Estours, who took over Chasselas in 1774, showed three towers, a fitting emblem for a château still marked by its three round towers.
