## History

Chassagne had a fortified house by the 14th century, held from the Duke of Burgundy. In 1481 its lord sold the maison forte, then closed by ditches and walls, to François de Ferrières, lord of Santenay. In the 17th century it stood on a rectangular platform with water-filled moats and a gate tower. The whole was heavily remodelled in the following century, and parts of the old towers were pulled down after the Revolution.

The present house dates from the 18th century and stands over vaulted cellars of the 15th century. The property was acquired by its present family in 1940. It is recorded in the French heritage inventory as a wine estate, with the master's house, a second house at the back of the courtyard and a winery on the west side, all set around one courtyard.

## Architecture

The master's house has a mansard roof: slate on the steep lower slopes, and lead-glazed tiles laid in diamond patterns on the upper part. Stone corners and bands frame its plastered walls. A small tiled canopy shelters the door, beside the stairs down to the cellar. To the east, the courtyard forms a terrace overlooking the walled vines below.

## Visiting

The Château de la Maltroye is a private family wine estate with no regular public visits. You can see its gate and roofs from the rue de la Murée at the top of the village. Combine it with a walk through Chassagne and a tasting at the Château de Chassagne-Montrachet.

## Did you know?

Its roof mixes two traditions: grey slate on the lower slopes, and glazed Burgundy tiles in a diamond pattern on the top, like a small cousin of the Hospices de Beaune.
