# Château de la Tour

> Château de la Tour: the only estate that makes its wine inside the walls of the Clos de Vougeot.

Château de la Tour is in Vougeot (Côte-d'Or), 28 min by road (25 km) from Beaune. Private, seen from outside · 19th century (1890) · Private driver from Beaune: €100 one way for the whole car, up to 4 guests.

Château de la Tour is the second château inside the walled Clos de Vougeot, a few hundred metres from the Cistercian château. Built in 1890, it belongs to the largest single owner in the Clos. Its wines are the only ones harvested, made, aged and bottled within the walls, as the monks once did.

## History

After centuries as a single monastic estate, the Clos de Vougeot was divided in 1889 and its ownership has been split ever since. Château de la Tour was built in 1890 by a merchant whose daughter married Jean Morin, a local estate owner. One of Morin's daughters married into the Labet family, and the property has passed down within the same family ever since.

Today François and Édouard Labet manage the estate. With 5.5 hectares spread over several plots, it is the largest owner in the Clos de Vougeot. The vines have been farmed in an organic spirit since 1992 and gained organic certification in 2021. A parcel of old vines planted in 1910 gives a separate cuvée, and an homage cuvée named after Jean Morin is made only in exceptional years.

## Architecture

Château de la Tour is a late 19th-century building standing among the vines of the Clos, a short walk from the Cistercian château. It was built as a working wine estate, and its vat room and cellars are still used for every step, from harvest to bottling. Its setting inside the medieval wall of the Clos makes it unique in Burgundy.

## Visiting

You see the château clearly from the lanes around the Clos de Vougeot, and a stop here combines naturally with a visit to the Cistercian château. It is a family wine estate rather than a monument, so contact the estate directly to ask whether tastings are possible on the day you plan to come.

## Did you know?

With 5.5 hectares, Château de la Tour is the largest owner in the Clos de Vougeot, a vineyard of about 50 hectares now shared among more than 80 owners.
