> Château de Taisey: a graceful house of the 1680s beside an old square tower, on a terrace above the Saône.

Taisey stands at the southern edge of Saint-Rémy, just outside Chalon-sur-Saône, on a terrace above the Saône. A square medieval tower survives next to an elegant house built in the 1680s. The château is private, but it tells a rich story of war, peace and a royal secretary from Chalon.

## History

A fortified house is recorded here in the 13th century, and in 1276 the land belonged to Gaudin de Taisey. It later passed to the Saint-Clément family. In 1595, near the end of the Wars of Religion, envoys of the Duke of Mayenne, leader of the Catholic League, and of King Henri IV met at Taisey and signed a truce that prepared the Treaty of Folembray.

In 1682 the estate was sold to Guillaume Magnien, a royal secretary and the son of a Chalon lawyer. Between 1685 and 1690 he built a new house next to the old fortress rather than replacing it. The plans were drawn by the architect Convers, and the work was carried out by Marcellin-Martin Lenoir of Chalon. Magnien's heirs, the Burgat family, kept Taisey until 1815.

## Architecture

Of the medieval house only a square tower remains, with a round-arched door on the first floor below the grooves of a vanished drawbridge. The 17th-century château has a long main block between two wings. A horseshoe stair leads to the central door, crowned by a tall arched window. Curved corners with flat rustication, pediments pierced with round windows and a wooden staircase inside add refinement.

## Visiting

Taisey is a private home and is not open to visitors, so please respect the owners' privacy. It lies only a few minutes from Chalon-sur-Saône and from the wine village of Givry, which makes it easy to include in a day exploring the southern Côte Chalonnaise.

## Did you know?

When Guillaume Magnien built his new house in the 1680s, he kept the medieval tower standing beside it. Both periods can still be seen side by side today.
