# Saint-Vincent tournante du Chablisien

> Saint-Vincent tournante du Chablisien: the winter wine festival of the Chablis vineyard, hosted by a different village each year.

Every winter one of the wine villages of the Chablisien hosts the Saint-Vincent tournante, in honour of the patron saint of wine growers. Streets are decorated, cellars open for tastings and the Piliers Chablisiens parade through the village. The 2027 edition, the 56th, is in Maligny.

## History

Saint-Vincent societies grew up in Burgundy in the 18th century as networks of solidarity and mutual aid between growers. The Confrérie des Piliers Chablisiens turned this tradition into a rotating festival in 1966, and it has moved from village to village ever since. In 2016 and 2019 the rotation made way for Burgundy's great Saint-Vincent Tournante, hosted in the Yonne by Irancy and then Vézelay.

Maligny hosted the very first edition in 1966, so 2027 is a return to where it all began. The village has chosen a Gallic theme for the weekend. The festival was not held in 2021 and 2022 because of the pandemic, and resumed in Fleys in 2023.

## What to expect

The weekend follows a well-loved pattern: a mass and official ceremony, the procession of the Piliers Chablisiens with the induction of new members, and a number of cellars opened for tasting. Growers give part of their harvest to make a special cuvée served during the festivities. Residents spend months making decorations for the streets, and street theatre, marching bands and travelling musicians keep the village busy until the traditional banquet and ball.

## Tips for the day

Expect cold weather and a crowd far larger than the village, so wear warm, comfortable shoes. Check the official programme for the tasting glass, cellar opening times and the banquet. Maligny is about 1 hour 35 minutes from Beaune, and being dropped at the edge of the festivities and collected later spares you the search for parking.

## Did you know?

Maligny, host of the 2027 festival, also held the very first Saint-Vincent tournante of the Chablisien, in 1966.
