## The story

The Michels took over this stone house, built as an artist's home and turned into a hotel-restaurant in the 1970s, in 2001. After a decade with a Bib Gourmand they won a star in 2014, and 2026 marks their twenty-fifth year. Philippe Michel, a Maître Cuisinier de France, worked with Pierre Gagnaire, whose taste for bold pairings left its mark.

Élisabeth looks after the dining rooms and the five bedrooms, each named after a plant. A flowering garden, a shaded terrace and a pergola make it a pleasant lunch stop in summer, a few minutes from the vineyards of Viré and Clessé.

## The cooking

The cooking starts from the product and adds instinctive, sometimes unexpected combinations; the chef has recently brought barbecue cooking into his repertoire. The menu changes about every five weeks, drawing on Bresse cream, Mâconnais produce and fish. The cellar holds around 400 references, with a clear emphasis on the Mâconnais and on Viré-Clessé in particular.

## Good to know

Montbellet is just under an hour from Beaune, off the A6 between Tournus and Mâcon. A three-course market menu costs €49 on weekday lunchtimes, followed by menus at €68, €90 and €110, and a seven-course tasting menu at €140. The restaurant opens from Wednesday to Sunday. It fits neatly into a Mâconnais wine day, and with a private driver nobody has to drive after the tastings and lunch.
