# Antonin Rodet

> Antonin Rodet: a Mercurey wine house founded in 1875, with a tasting cellar in the stables of a 17th-century mansion.

Antonin Rodet is in Mercurey (Saône-et-Loire), 31 min by road (30 km) from Beaune. Opening hours: 1 May to 31 October: Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 18:00; 1 November to 30 April: Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 18:00 · Allow about 1 hour · Private driver from Beaune: €115 one way for the whole car, up to 4 guests.

Antonin Rodet has been one of the names of Mercurey since 1875. Its cellar door is in the Clos Antonin Rodet, a 17th-century house with Burgundian glazed-tile roofs and an English-style park in the heart of the village. The old stables have become a tasting cellar where visitors taste the wines of the house and its estates, with a focus on the Côte Chalonnaise.

## History

The house was founded in 1875 by Antoine Rodet, known as Antonin, the son of a Chalon-sur-Saône grocer who also dealt in wine, at a time when Chalon was a hub of the wine trade. His marriage to Marie-Françoise Adenot, from a farming family near Mercurey, brought land, and he bought his first vines in 1887, while phylloxera was destroying the Burgundy vineyard.

After Antoine's death in 1905, his son Antonin, a travelling salesman since the age of 16, built the house's name abroad. The house won a silver medal at the Paris World's Fair of 1900. The family no longer runs the company, but Antonin Rodet still makes Côte Chalonnaise wines and also runs the Domaine du Château de Mercey, in the Maranges. Its winemaker, Anne-Laure Hernette, creates the cuvées and works closely with the vineyard teams.

## What you will see

In the old stables, the team leads a commented tasting from the range of the house and its estates, from Mercurey village to the Rully premier cru Clos la Bressande, a monopole. Several tasting circuits on the Côte Chalonnaise can be booked, and the shop sells wines and accessories for serving them. Take time to walk in the park, with its century-old trees, and to see the old greenhouse, whose glass roof dates from the time of Eiffel.
