# Blagny

> Blagny: a tiny hilltop hamlet between Meursault and Puligny, with a rare red appellation and celebrated white premiers crus.

Blagny is a wine village (Côte de Beaune), 22 min by road (12 km) from Beaune. Red and white wines · 7 premiers crus · Private driver from Beaune: €75 one way for the whole car, up to 4 guests.

Blagny is a handful of houses and a small chapel on the slope above Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, where the two communes meet. Its name covers a rare red appellation, yet most of its vines are Chardonnay. Those whites are sold as Meursault or Puligny-Montrachet premier cru, depending on which side of the boundary they grow.

## History

Blagny first appears in writing in the late 12th century, in the records of the Cistercian abbey of Maizières, and the first traces of vines here date from the same period. The monks of Maizières worked these high slopes, well above the villages below. The hamlet's small chapel, built in the 15th century, has been a listed historic monument since 1984. It stands on the Puligny-Montrachet side and remains in private hands.

The Blagny appellation was recognised by the decree of 31 July 1937, and it applies to red wine only. White wines from the same slopes take the names of the two communes, Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. Today Chardonnay covers most of the hillside: in 2022 only 4.46 hectares were in production as red Blagny, according to the Burgundy wine board. In March 2022 the hamlet co-hosted the Saint-Vincent tournante, Burgundy's roving wine festival, with Puligny-Montrachet and Corpeau.

## The wines

The vines sit between 340 and 400 metres, on marls covered with limestone scree near the top, with brown limestone soils, and clay-limestone ground lower down. The Blagny appellation is red only, from Pinot Noir: ruby to crimson, with small red or black fruit. The whites are Chardonnay. On the Meursault side they are sold as Meursault premier cru, and on the Puligny side as Puligny-Montrachet premier cru, from climats such as Sous le Puits or La Garenne.

**Well-known premiers crus (7 premiers crus)**: La Jeunellotte, La Pièce sous le Bois, Sous le Dos d'Ane, Sous Blagny, Hameau de Blagny, Sous le Puits

## What to see

### Blagny chapel

A small 15th-century chapel at the heart of the hamlet, listed as a historic monument in 1984. It is privately owned, so admire it from the outside.

### Walking up from Meursault

A walking circuit of about 7 km leaves Meursault and climbs through the vineyards to the hamlet and back. It is the best way to feel how the slope rises towards the woods.

### The view over the premiers crus

From the edge of the hamlet, the premier cru vineyards of Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet fall away below you towards the two villages and the plain beyond.

## Good to know

Plan 30 to 45 minutes. Blagny fits neatly between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. Walkers can take the 7 km circuit from Meursault while your driver waits in Blagny or back in the village.

## Did you know?

Among Meursault's 19 premiers crus is one simply called Blagny, reserved for white wine. It explains labels that read Meursault-Blagny, while red wine from the hamlet is sold as Blagny.
