# Chassagne-Montrachet

> Chassagne-Montrachet: Montrachet's southern neighbour, a village of great whites, serious reds and pale stone quarries.

Chassagne-Montrachet is a wine village (Côte de Beaune), 20 min by road (16 km) from Beaune. Red and white wines · 3 grands crus · Private driver from Beaune: €85 one way for the whole car, up to 4 guests.

Chassagne-Montrachet shares the Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet grands crus with Puligny and holds all of a third, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet. Its limestone quarries form a pale rock face on the hillside. With 55 premier cru climats, it offers a wide range of whites and a real tradition of red wine.

## History

Chassagne is recorded in 886 as Cassaneas, in the archives of the abbey of Saint-Seine. In the Middle Ages religious houses held vines here, and the premier cru named Abbaye de Morgeot still carries that memory. For centuries Chassagne was known above all for its red wine. Chardonnay spread across the village mainly in the second half of the 20th century, and whites now cover more than twice the area of reds.

A decree of 27 November 1879 renamed Chassagne-le-Haut as Chassagne-Montrachet, by the same act that created Puligny-Montrachet. The appellation dates from 31 July 1937 and also covers part of neighbouring Remigny. Chassagne is a village of stone as well as wine. Its quarries yield a pale limestone used in the houses of the southern Côte de Beaune, and in Paris for paving at the Trocadéro and the Louvre Pyramid. Chassagne hosted the Saint-Vincent tournante in 1970 and 2010.

## The wines

Vines grow between 220 and 325 metres on Jurassic limestone, with soils that range from stony to marly or sandy. In 2022 the Burgundy wine board counted about 223 hectares of Chardonnay and 86 of Pinot Noir. The whites are golden with green glints, hawthorn, acacia, hazelnut and a flinty edge. The reds are ruby with cherry and wild strawberry, and firm tannins that gain depth with age.

**All the grands crus (3)**: Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet

**Well-known premiers crus (55 premiers crus)**: Morgeot, Clos Saint-Jean, La Romanée, Les Chenevottes, Les Vergers, La Maltroie

## What to see

### The Montrachet slope

In the north of the commune, close to the Puligny boundary, lie Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and the tiny Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet. Walk the vineyard lanes to see these famous plots up close.

### The quarry front

Pale limestone faces mark the Chassagne quarries on the hillside. They are working sites and not open to visitors, but they are part of the view as you walk the vineyards.

## Good to know

Allow one to two hours. Chassagne combines easily with Puligny-Montrachet for a day of whites, or with Santenay and Saint-Aubin to compare reds and whites. The Voie des Vignes cycle route passes through the village.

## Did you know?

Michelle Bachelet, twice President of Chile, descends from Louis-Joseph Bachelet, a wine merchant from Chassagne who emigrated to Chile in 1860 after being hired as a winemaking expert.
