# Gevrey-Chambertin

> Gevrey-Chambertin: Nine grands crus, more than any other Burgundy village, led by Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze.

Gevrey-Chambertin is a wine village (Côte de Nuits), 32 min by road (30 km) from Beaune. Red wine · 9 grands crus · Private driver from Beaune: €115 one way for the whole car, up to 4 guests.

Coming from Dijon, Gevrey-Chambertin is where the Côte's great line of grands crus begins, and it is the most decorated village of all: nine of Burgundy's 33 grands crus lie here. The old village sits at the mouth of the Combe de Lavaux, with a medieval castle, an old church and streets of winegrowers' houses.

## History

Gevrey grew up at the mouth of the Combe de Lavaux, below the hills. In the seventh century, tradition says, Duke Amalgaire gave land here to the Abbey of Bèze, the origin of the Clos de Bèze, one of the oldest named vineyards on the Côte. In 1219 the abbey ceded the clos to the canons of Langres Cathedral, who held it for centuries.

The Abbey of Cluny also held land here and, from about 1257, fortified its priory into the castle that still overlooks the old village. The Chambertin vineyard has carried its name since the 13th century, and Chambertin is said to have been Napoleon's favourite wine. In 1847 King Louis-Philippe allowed Gevrey to add Chambertin to its name, a move many other villages later copied.

## The wines

Gevrey makes red wine only, from Pinot Noir. The appellation has 26 premiers crus, mostly high on the slope between 280 and 380 metres, where thin brown limestone soils sit over marls, scree and red silt washed down from the plateau. The gravels bring finesse and the fossil-rich marls bring body. Young wines show strawberry, blackberry and violet; with age come liquorice, leather and forest-floor notes. These are powerful, long-lived wines.

**All the grands crus (9)**: Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Chapelle-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin

**Well-known premiers crus (26 premiers crus)**: Clos Saint-Jacques, Lavaut Saint-Jacques, Les Cazetiers, Combe au Moine, Aux Combottes, Estournelles-Saint-Jacques

## What to see

### The castle

Fortified by the monks of Cluny in the 13th century, Gevrey's castle is a listed historic monument. It is private, but the square in front looks over the old village and the vines.

### Halle Chambertin

The village's old market hall now houses the tourist office and an interactive visitor space on the winegrower's work, the UNESCO-listed Climats and the nearby Combe Lavaux nature reserve.

### Combe Lavaux nature reserve

A national nature reserve since 2004, the combe behind the village offers cool woodland paths, limestone cliffs and an interpretation trail, a welcome break on a warm afternoon.

### The grand cru road

Drive or walk the Route des Grands Crus south of the village towards Morey-Saint-Denis. Chambertin, Clos de Bèze and the other grands crus line the slope along the road.

## Good to know

Allow ninety minutes to two hours for a tasting, a walk through the old village and a look at the grands crus. Gevrey pairs naturally with Morey-Saint-Denis and Chambolle-Musigny just to the south.

## Did you know?

In 2008 archaeologists in Gevrey uncovered neat rows of planting pits from a Gallo-Roman vineyard on the plain. Street signs for the Rue des Vignes Romaines now recall the site.
