## History

The village took its present name in 1988. Until then the commune was called Serrigny, and Ladoix was only a hamlet at the foot of the vineyards. As the Ladoix appellation grew in reputation, the council chose to identify with its wine, took the name Ladoix-Serrigny and moved the town hall to Ladoix. The name Ladoix comes from an old word for a spring. The commune also includes the hamlets of Buisson, Corcelles and Neuvelle.

Two religious buildings tell the older story. The chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Chemin stands beside the old road from Chalon-sur-Saône to Langres, below the Corton vineyards. It joins an 11th-century Romanesque part to a 15th-century Gothic chapel, partly paid for by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. The church of Saint-Marcel keeps a 13th-century choir and transept. Saint Marcel is honoured here as the protector of winegrowers.

## The wines

Ladoix has 11 premier cru climats. The upper slope has stony, reddish soils with iron-rich oolite and marl, suited to white wine. At mid-slope, brown limestone soils full of flinty debris give firm, vivid reds, softer on the clay at the foot. Vines face east to south, between 230 and 325 metres. Reds from Pinot Noir are round and silky, with raspberry and cherry. Whites from Chardonnay show acacia, ripe apple and a buttery touch. A few parcels here are sold as Aloxe-Corton.

**All the grands crus (2)**: Corton, Corton-Charlemagne

**Well-known premiers crus (11 premiers crus)**: La Micaude, Les Joyeuses, Bois Roussot, Le Clou d'Orge, La Corvée, Les Grêchons et Foutrières

## What to see

### Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Chemin

A small chapel by the old main road, at the foot of the Corton vineyards. Its Romanesque part dates from the 11th century and its Gothic chapel from the 15th.

### Église Saint-Marcel

The village church has a 13th-century choir and transept. It is dedicated to Saint Marcel, the local protector of winegrowers.

### Vineyard paths below Corton

Marked paths lead from the village into the vineyards on the lower slopes of the hill of Corton. They are an easy way to see premier cru and grand cru plots up close.

## Good to know

Allow about an hour for the village, the chapel and a short vineyard walk. Ladoix-Serrigny combines naturally with Aloxe-Corton and Pernand-Vergelesses for a morning around the hill of Corton, before lunch back in Beaune.

## Did you know?

The two-coloured Pierre de Corton limestone, rust-red and blue-grey, comes from quarries around the hill of Corton, such as the one at Ladoix-Buisson. It was widely used for buildings in Ladoix-Serrigny, Pernand-Vergelesses, Savigny-lès-Beaune and Dijon.
