# Maranges

> Maranges: Three villages on the last slopes of the Côte de Beaune, sharing one appellation for bright, fruity reds.

Maranges is a wine village (Côte de Beaune), 28 min by road (22 km) from Beaune. Red and white wines · 7 premiers crus · Private driver from Beaune: €95 one way for the whole car, up to 4 guests.

Maranges is the shared appellation of Cheilly-lès-Maranges, Dezize-lès-Maranges and Sampigny-lès-Maranges, three villages just beyond Santenay. They lie in Saône-et-Loire, yet their slopes belong to the Côte de Beaune. This is red-wine country, with seven premier cru climats and a relaxed, rural feel.

## History

Maranges wine long stayed in the shadow of more famous names. For generations much of it was sold in bulk to merchants, who valued its colour and tannin to strengthen their blends. The villages still took pride in their hillside. In 1898 Dezize and Cheilly were allowed to add lès-Maranges to their names, and Sampigny followed in 1899. Dezize had first asked in 1895, to avoid confusion with the town of Decize in the Nièvre.

Each village later received its own appellation, but most of the wine was sold as Côte de Beaune-Villages. A decree of 23 May 1989 finally united the three under the single name Maranges, starting with the 1988 harvest. Seven climats are classified premier cru. Above Dezize rises the Mont de Sène, the hill of the Three Crosses, where the Romans built a temple to Mercury on the summit.

## The wines

Vines face mostly south to southeast, between 240 and 400 metres. Cheilly has fairly light, stony soils, while Sampigny and Dezize share the brown limestone and limestone marls of southern Santenay. Red dominates: about 181 hectares of Pinot Noir against 19 of Chardonnay in 2022, per the Burgundy wine board. The reds are raspberry ruby, sometimes darker, and burst with fruit. The whites, a delicate gold, speak of hawthorn, acacia and honeysuckle.

**Well-known premiers crus (7 premiers crus)**: La Fussière, Clos de la Fussière, Le Clos des Rois, Les Clos Roussots, Clos de la Boutière, Le Clos des Loyères

## What to see

### Dezize-lès-Maranges

The highest of the three villages gathers around its medieval church of Saint-Martin and looks out over the vineyards. It is also the closest village to the Mont de Sène.

### Greenway to Nolay

The former Santenay to Nolay railway, now a 13 km greenway, crosses the Maranges hillside. It makes an easy walk or bike ride through the vineyards.

### Montagne des Trois Croix

The Mont de Sène, 521 metres high, straddles Dezize and Santenay. Its summit gives wide views over the Côte de Beaune, the Saône valley and the Morvan.

## Good to know

Allow an hour or two. The Maranges pair naturally with Santenay next door, and together they make a relaxed end to a southern Côte de Beaune day. Walkers and cyclists will enjoy the greenway towards Nolay.

## Did you know?

In January 2026 the three Maranges villages hosted the 82nd Saint-Vincent tournante, Burgundy's roving wine festival, 29 years after they first welcomed it in 1997.
