About the château
Lantilly stands on a hillside between Semur-en-Auxois and Montbard, about an hour from Beaune. It is nicknamed the château aux cent fenêtres, the château of a hundred windows. From its terraces the view opens over the valley of Les Laumes and the site of Alésia. It is a private family home. The park and the flowering kitchen garden open from June to September, and the house itself only on the European Heritage Days.
History
A medieval fortress once stood on this hill above the plain of Les Laumes. After it was destroyed, a new château was built on the old site in 1709, in the sober classical style of the early 18th century. Its long rows of windows gave it the nickname by which it is still known in the area. The interiors were decorated during the 18th century.
The same family has owned Lantilly since the late 18th century, and Bertrand and Claire de Virieu live here today. The house is protected in stages: its façades and roofs were listed in 1968 and its park in 1994. In 1995 the complete set of interiors was classified as a historic monument. The owners have also restored the gardens, and the flowering kitchen garden has received the Jardin remarquable label.
Architecture
Lantilly is a classical house of 1709, sober in line, with regular rows of tall windows facing the valley. Inside, the 18th-century decoration has survived, and the interiors are classified as a whole. Around the house, a park with remarkable old trees surrounds an ornamental garden, a greenhouse, an orangery and a kitchen garden mixing vegetables, roses, herbs and flowers.
