About the château
Missery is a small village of the southern Auxois, about an hour from Beaune, between Pouilly-en-Auxois and Saulieu. Its château is an elegant 18th-century house built on the platform of an older fortress, whose round towers and water-filled moats were kept. It is a private home.
History
Missery is first recorded in 1360, and in the late Middle Ages the estate belonged to a succession of local lords, among them Jehan de Maulain. At the end of the 16th century, during the Wars of Religion, the castle belonged to a Monsieur de Lux and suffered damage. Part of the old fortress survived, including its towers and moats.
In the 18th century the house was rebuilt in the classical taste. In 1752 it was reconstructed for Jean-Claude-Baptiste de Suremain de Flammerans, a councillor at the Parlement, and the medieval towers were kept around the new building. In 1981 the gate, the façades and roofs, the main staircases, the grand salon and the painted panelling of one tower were classified as a historic monument, together with the moats and bridge.
Architecture
The château sits on a rectangular platform surrounded by water-filled moats, crossed by a bridge. Two towers frame the main building, and two others served as a chapel and a dovecote. Inside, the main staircase and the service staircase keep their wrought-iron railings. The grand salon retains its decoration, and a room in the north-west tower is lined with painted panelling.

Tips for your visit
The château is private and is not open for regular visits, so please respect the owners' privacy. Missery fits into a drive between Pouilly-en-Auxois, Mont-Saint-Jean and Saulieu, where the basilica and food are further reasons to stop. Check with the local tourist office for any opening dates.
