About the château
Standing among farm buildings three kilometres from Saint-Seine-sur-Vingeanne, the Château de Rosières is a remarkably intact medieval fortified house. Its tall keep, finished around 1445, still has its machicolations, wall walk and a corner watchtower. The main medieval buildings, the gate and a 17th-century wing are classified as a historic monument.
History
Rosières appears in charters from the 11th century as a grange, a farming estate. Around 1321 Duke Odo IV granted it to the first family named Saint-Seine, and Pierre de Saint-Seine developed the estate until his death in 1350. In the 15th century, with the duke's approval, the manor was fortified as a refuge in troubled times, and the keep seems to have been finished in 1445.
In 1682 the estate passed to Claude Bernard-Maillard, who made alterations and built a classical pavilion beside the medieval house. After several changes of owner, including a sale in 1733 to Jean Chanteau, secretary at the Chambre des comptes of Dole, it returned in 1752 to the lords of Saint-Seine, who used it as a secondary property lived in by stewards. This froze the building in its late 17th-century state. The Bergerot family bought it in 1980.
Architecture
The keep measures about 21 by 13.5 metres, with walls 1.8 metres thick rising 19 metres from the bottom of the moat to the roof. It keeps a full ring of machicolations, a complete wall walk and one surviving corner turret, and a square 14th-century tower strengthens its fourth corner. Inside are a 15th-century fireplace, a 17th-century painted ceiling and a vaulted former kitchen.
Visiting
Tips for your visit
The owners have run the château as a bed and breakfast, with guest rooms inside the keep, and have opened it to visitors, with treasure hunts for children. Its website is no longer online, so check with the tourist office that it still receives guests and visitors before you travel. Rosières lies in the far north-east of Côte-d'Or and pairs well with Fontaine-Française and Talmay.

Did you know? One room at the top of the square tower is known as the prison: its vault still holds four iron rings, and the room is lit only by two arrow slits.
