About the château

Frôlois stands on a rocky spur above its small village, about 75 minutes from Beaune. From outside it looks austere. Inside, each century has left its mark, from a Renaissance bedroom to an 18th-century salon hung with painted hangings from Bergamo in Italy. It is a private home, open for guided tours in summer.

History

According to the regional tourist office, a fortress stood on this spur by the early 11th century. The castle that survives took shape mainly in the 13th and 14th centuries, and its oldest walls still give it a severe outline. In the Renaissance a bedroom on the first floor received rich decoration. It is still known as the room of Antoine de Vergy.

In 1683 Pierre du Ban de la Feuillée bought Frôlois and had the lordship raised to a county. The castle was adapted to a more comfortable way of life in the 17th and 18th centuries, with a large hall and a grand salon. After the Revolution, in 1795, it was acquired by Nicolas Pierre Regnault. Its façades, roofs and the Vergy bedroom were listed in 1977.

Architecture

The main building is a large 17th-century residence set on the edge of the rock, with two levels of terraces overlooking the valley. Retaining walls and parts of the medieval enclosure survive around it. On the ground floor are a 17th-century hall and an 18th-century grand salon with painted hangings from Bergamo. Upstairs, the Renaissance bedroom of Antoine de Vergy keeps its decoration.
