About the château
Vault-de-Lugny lies six kilometres west of Avallon, on the edge of the Morvan, about 75 minutes from Beaune. Behind its moats rises a tall square keep, classified as a historic monument. The castle is now a five-star hotel with only sixteen rooms and suites, and a restaurant that holds a Michelin star.
History
A first castle is recorded here in the 12th century. The estate grew over the following centuries, with a square keep in the late Middle Ages and a large residence built around 1450 for Guy de Jaucourt. Moats, a drawbridge, crenellations and loopholes completed its defences. Further building campaigns followed in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the drawbridge dates from the 16th.
The keep was classified as a historic monument in 1971. The estate, still private property, now combines a hotel and a farm. In 1994 the castle served as the setting for a French television version of the game Cluedo, broadcast on France 3. Today the hotel is rated five stars and makes a quiet base between Avallon, Vézelay and the Cure valley.
Architecture
The castle keeps the features of a small medieval stronghold: moats, a drawbridge of the 16th century, crenellations, loopholes and a covered walkway. Its keep is a square tower about 19 metres high and 10 metres wide, the part classified as a historic monument. Beside it stands the large residence of the mid-15th century, built for Guy de Jaucourt, which gives the castle its domestic side.
