Do not rely on Uber in Beaune: its app lists the town, but few drivers work around it and the wine villages, and Uber itself says pickups there may take longer than in larger cities. Beaune has only a few taxi companies, often out on bookings in the evening and on Sundays, so book a taxi or a licensed private driver (French VTC) in advance. A private driver's price is per car, not per person: from €60 from Beaune station to a hotel in Beaune, or €290 for a 4-hour wine tour and €560 for 8 hours, for up to four guests.

Does Uber work in Beaune and the wine villages?
Barely: Uber lists Beaune in its app, but few drivers work around the town and the wine villages, so do not count on a car between tastings or late in the evening.
Uber has operated in the Dijon area since November 2023 and itself warns that pickups in Beaune may take longer than in larger cities. In Dijon it can be a backup, but it is not a plan for the vineyards.
Can you get a taxi at Beaune station?
Sometimes, but not reliably: Beaune has only a few taxi companies and their cars are often out on bookings, especially in the evening and on Sundays, so call one ahead of your arrival.
A taxi may be waiting at the station, but there is no guarantee a car is free at short notice to take you from one domaine to the next, or back from a village at 18.00. The station is about 1 km from the Hôtel-Dieu, a 10 to 15 minute walk, yet kerbs, cobbles and narrow pavements slow you down with large suitcases, and many hotels and guest houses in the wine villages lie 5 to 20 km out of town.
Taxi fares are metered and regulated. For 2026 the national maximums are a €4.48 pick-up charge, €1.30 per kilometre and €42.15 per hour of waiting, and each prefecture sets its local rates within them.
What is a private driver (VTC), and how is it different from a taxi?
A VTC, voiture de transport avec chauffeur, is a licensed private car with a driver, booked in advance on terms agreed before the ride (French Code des transports, article L3122-1).
Unlike a taxi, a VTC may not be hailed in the street or wait for passengers at a taxi rank: it may only pick up passengers who have booked in advance (article L3120-2), while a taxi holds a licence to wait for clients on the public road and charges by the meter, at fares capped by the State. Côte Privée is a VTC: you book online, and your driver meets you at the time and place you chose, at a fixed price per car.
Uber, taxi or private driver: how do they compare?
It depends on whether you need one ride or a day with several stops: a taxi suits a single trip such as back to your hotel, a private driver suits several villages in a day, and Uber is not something to plan around.
| Option | How you get it | What it costs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uber | In the app, if a driver is near; few work around Beaune | Shown in the app | A backup in Dijon, not a plan for the vineyards |
| Taxi | Call ahead: only a few companies, often booked in the evening and on Sundays | Metered, regulated fares plus waiting time | A single trip, such as back to your hotel |
| Shared minibus tour | Leaves the Beaune tourist office every day; fixed route and times | €49 to €65 per person, tastings in the price (Safari Tours, 2026) | One or two people who want no planning |
| Private driver (VTC) | Booked in advance; price agreed before the ride; not hailed in the street | Per car for 1 to 4 guests: from €60 from Beaune station to a hotel in Beaune, €290 for 4 hours, €560 for 8 hours | Two to four people, several villages in a day, wine tastings |
Per person or per car: when is a private driver cheaper?
Every private driver price is per vehicle, for up to four guests, with tolls, parking and any waiting caused by delays included, so the cost per head falls as the group grows.
The half day of 4 hours is €290 per car: €145 each for two people and €72.50 each for four, before tastings. A shared tour costs €49 to €65 per person with tastings in the price, so it is cheaper for one or two people; with a private driver you pay for choosing your own domaines, pickup at your door and your own timing, and for three or four people the gap shrinks quickly.
Wine tours and drinking: who drives?
With a private driver nobody in your party drives, so everyone can taste, which matters in France, where the drink-drive limit is 0.5 g of alcohol per litre of blood.
Your driver collects you at your hotel or at Beaune station, drives you between two to four domaines, waits while you taste and brings you back, with your cases of wine in the boot. Tastings are paid directly to each domaine, and we suggest estates and make the appointments for you free of charge. For dinner, your driver waits nearby while you dine, up to 3 hours, so nobody has to drive.
When and how do you book?
A taxi is booked by phone, a private driver online, and both ahead of time.
- Taxi: call a company ahead of your arrival, especially for evenings, Sundays and busy weekends such as the Hospices de Beaune wine sale in mid-November.
- Private driver: advance booking only, which takes about two minutes online. Your driver confirms by e-mail with a secure link to pay a 30% deposit by card, and you pay the balance on the day, by card or in cash.
- Station pickup: your driver meets you at Beaune station by prior reservation only, from €60 per car to a hotel in Beaune, for up to four guests; every village page shows its own price.
- Languages: your driver speaks English, French, Mandarin Chinese and Arabic.
