Every Saturday morning, all year round, around sixty traders set up in the centre of Cluny, depending on the season. The market spreads along the Place and Rue du 11 Août 1944 and the Place du Marché, beside the abbey. It is a lively way to see the town as its residents live it.
Stalls sell fresh produce, meat and charcuterie, bread and pastries, fruit and vegetables, cheeses, honey and wine, alongside flowers, plants, clothing and crafts. Take time to look up at the medieval house fronts as you browse. Bronze studs set in the pavement mark the town's signed walking route, which you can follow once your basket is full, before or after visiting the abbey.
Cluny grew as a monastic town around its abbey, and the market streets pass through the heart of it. More than 200 houses built between the 11th and 14th centuries survive, about fifty with all or part of their original facade decoration. Craftsmen worked on the ground floor, while rows of windows on the floor above let the household watch the street. The more windows a house had, the richer its owner.

The market runs on Saturday mornings throughout the year, from 7:30 to 13:00. The place and rue du 11 Août 1944, the place du Marché and the rue Porte-des-Prés are closed to traffic and parking from 5:00 to 14:00, so your driver will drop you at the edge of the monastic town. Pets are welcome, and the market is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. Arrive early for the best choice, and bring a bag for cheese or fruit. Combine it with the abbey and the Haras national, both a few steps away.
What to combine with Cluny Market on the same day, nearest first.
Cluny Market is about 1 h 07 from Beaune by road (87 km). With a private driver, the trip from Beaune starts at €240 for the whole car, up to 4 guests.
Did you know? The Cluny tourist office points out that the number of windows on a medieval house front was a sign of wealth: the more openings on the upper floor, the richer the owner.
