About the château

The château of Bresse-sur-Grosne stands in the Grosne valley between Chalon and Cluny. Around a courtyard open to the park, it combines a medieval keep, a 12th-century chapel, 17th-century wine buildings and a model farm. It has belonged to the same family since the end of the 18th century.

History

The château is mentioned in 1180 in a bull of Pope Alexander III, and in the 12th century it belonged to a noble family called Brecis or Bressis. Around 1450 it passed by marriage to the Palatin de Dyo, a powerful house of the Charolais. In 1617 they sold it, with a right of repurchase, to the Cistercian monks of La Ferté, who started a wine estate here.

The monks put up the working buildings for their vineyard before the Palatin de Dyo recovered the property in 1689. In the 18th century it passed by marriage to the Cambis family from Provence, and in 1769 it was sold to Philibert Chiquet of Chalon. In 1799 his great-niece brought it by marriage to the Murard de Saint-Romain family, who still own it. In 1870 the Paris architect Sanson restored the château.

Architecture

The main building is flanked by two wings, and a fourth range was pulled down to open the courtyard to the park. The east wing holds the keep, an entrance with a drawbridge and a 19th-century extension, while a round tower marks the north-west corner. A neo-Renaissance range joins an older block on the west. The park keeps the remains of an orangery, an ice house and a dovecote.
