About Montagny
Montagny lies at the southern end of the Côte Chalonnaise, spread over four villages around the small town of Buxy, about 50 minutes from Beaune. It makes only white wine, all Chardonnay. With 49 premiers crus covering around 60 percent of the vineyard, classified wine is the rule here rather than the exception.
The wines
Montagny is white only, from Chardonnay. The vines face east and south-east at 250 to 400 metres, on a varied mix of Bajocian limestone, Liassic marls and marly limestones, Triassic sandstone and Kimmeridgian limestone. Of about 360 hectares, some 220 are premier cru, spread over 49 climats. The wines are fresh and lively, often with white flowers, citrus and a clean mineral finish.
History
The village was once called Montagniacum ad Buxiacum, Montagny by Buxy. In 1120 the Bishop of Chalon gave land here to the abbots of the Cistercian abbey of La Ferté, who kept a country house in the village. The Burgundy wine board records that the monks of Cluny preferred this wine to any other. Dry-stone huts called cadoles still stand in the vineyards, such as the restored one at Les Coères.
Buxy, the small market town at the heart of the appellation, grew up as a walled Châtel between the 12th and 16th centuries, with six towers and some forty houses inside. Several towers survive, among them the Tour du Roi and the Tour Rouge, along with 16th-century stair towers. The appellation was created in 1936, covering Montagny-lès-Buxy, Buxy, Saint-Vallerin and Jully-lès-Buxy, for white wine only.

What to see
Old Buxy
The walled Châtel of Buxy took shape between the 12th and 16th centuries. Walk past surviving towers such as the Tour Rouge and the Tour du Roi, and 16th-century stair towers.
Cadoles in the vines
Small dry-stone huts once sheltered vineyard workers from the weather. A good example stands in the premier cru Les Coères, where one has been carefully restored.
Church of Saint-Vincent
Montagny-lès-Buxy's village church is Romanesque in origin, with an 18th-century choir and a 19th-century nave. Saint Vincent is the patron saint of winegrowers.
