The Château de la Greffière stands among the vines of La Roche-Vineuse, between Mâcon and Cluny. The Greuzard family has made wine here for four generations and welcomes visitors to its Musée de la Vigne et du Vin, its winery and a vaulted cellar for tasting. A signposted path through the vineyard completes the visit.

What you will see

The museum gathers more than 2,000 tools from the trades of the early 20th-century countryside, from the joiner and the blacksmith to the cooper and, of course, the winegrower. A guide then takes you through the modern winery, with its stainless-steel vats and presses, before a tasting in the vaulted cellar; children get fruit juice. Some 19 wines are poured, among them Mâcon La Roche-Vineuse, Saint-Véran, Mâcon Serrières, Saint-Amour and the red Bourgogne La Greffière Monopole. Afterwards, a path of about 2 kilometres leads through the vines, with panels on grapes and appellations and a wide view over the estate.

History

The estate's oldest buildings, a typical Mâconnais house and an old press house, show that wine was made here long before the château. The vaulted cellar was built at the end of the 18th century, and the château itself in 1830.

The Greuzard family bought the estate in 1924 and has been restoring it ever since. Isabelle, Vincent and Xavier Greuzard now farm about 60 hectares in eight villages of southern Burgundy and the Beaujolais crus, working the four Burgundy grapes: chardonnay and aligoté for the whites, pinot noir and gamay for the reds. The family also makes the wines of the Château des Bois, at Milly-Lamartine.
