In the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, at the southern edge of Collonges-lès-Bévy, this château catches the eye with its roof of glazed Burgundy tiles. It was home to General Gassendi and later to a grandson of the mathematician Gaspard Monge. Badly damaged by fire in December 2020, it is being restored and still opens in summer.
The château was built from the second half of the 17th century, on the site of an earlier fortress whose moats it kept, and the historic-monument record dates work to about 1720. In 1806 it was bought by General Gassendi, who had been an instructor of the young Napoleon at the military school of Brienne and later became a peer of France. In 1834 it passed to Ernest, grandson of Gaspard Monge, founder of the École polytechnique.
A first renovation took place around 1870, with the chapel restored around 1880, and the moats were filled in as the formal gardens gave way to an English-style park. In 1975 the façades, roofs, staircase and decorated rooms were listed. On 10 December 2020 a fire destroyed about 60 per cent of the roof and ruined the second floor of the south wing. Restoration began, and a new roof was completed in 2023.
The main building has a U plan, with two towers extending the wings: one holds the chapel, the other a dovecote. The roof of glazed tiles in a red and dark blue chequer pattern is typical of Burgundy. Inside are a grand stone staircase with wrought-iron railings and sculptures, and a small dining room decorated with Italian stucco on the themes of wine, Bacchus and hunting.

The château opens for about six weeks each summer, from mid-July to about 20 August, every afternoon. Because of the restoration, access to the exterior, the park and the interior depends on the progress of the works, and the visit also explains the crafts involved in rebuilding.
What to combine with Château de Collonges-lès-Bévy on the same day, nearest first.
Château de Collonges-lès-Bévy is about 24 min from Beaune by road (21 km). With a private driver, the trip from Beaune starts at €95 for the whole car, up to 4 guests.
Did you know? The little Bacchus dining room, decorated with Italian stucco on the theme of wine, was badly damaged in the 2020 fire, and its restoration calls on many traditional craft skills.
