About Chambolle-Musigny
Chambolle-Musigny is a small village at the foot of a combe, surrounded by some of the most precious vineyard land in Burgundy. Its reds are often called the most feminine of the Côte de Nuits: fragrant, fine and silky. Two grands crus, Musigny and Bonnes-Mares, frame the village.
The wines
Chambolle-Musigny village wine is red only, from Pinot Noir. The slope faces east at 250 to 300 metres, with thin soils over hard limestone; fissures in the rock let the roots go deep. The wines are bright ruby, with violet, strawberry and raspberry, turning to spice, truffle and forest floor with age. Silky tannins are the village signature. The appellation has 24 premiers crus, led by Les Amoureuses.
History
The village appears in records in the early 12th century and was long a dependency of the Abbey of Cîteaux. The Musigny vineyard takes its name from a family of Musigny who held important posts at the court of the Dukes of Burgundy in the 14th century. A court ruling defined its limits on 16 April 1929, before the AOC system, and it has always been regarded as a grand cru.
In 1878 Chambolle added the name of its most famous vineyard, Musigny, to its own. The appellation came in September 1936, among the very first in France. In 1938 Chambolle hosted the first Saint-Vincent Tournante, the winegrowers' festival that moves to a different village each January. It returned in 2024, shared with Morey-Saint-Denis, and drew around 80,000 visitors over two days.

What to see
Église Sainte-Barbe
Built in the early 16th century, the church has a choir painted with murals of the same period, protected as a historic monument. Look for the sundial of 1855 on the outside.
The Sully lime tree
Near the church stands a lime tree said to date from the reign of Henri IV, more than 400 years ago. A sign at its foot gives its girth as 8.70 metres.
Les Amoureuses and Musigny
Between the village and the Château du Clos de Vougeot lie the premier cru Les Amoureuses and the grand cru Musigny, just above the Clos. A short walk takes you through both.
Tips for your visit
Allow about an hour. See the church and the old lime tree, then walk down through the vines towards the Château du Clos de Vougeot. Chambolle combines well with Morey-Saint-Denis and Vougeot.
