About the château
The Château de Changey stands in the hamlet of Changey, in the hills of Échevronne just north of Pernand-Vergelesses. Built in the first half of the 18th century, it was the seat of the Guyard family, marquis de Changey. Its whole estate, including the park and its water system, was listed as a historic monument in 2019.
History
After belonging to several lords, the land of Échevronne passed to the Duke of Burgundy and then to the King of France. In 1586 it was sold to Jehan de Damas, and in 1640 to François Blondeau, president of the Parliament of Metz. In 1683 it was bought by Hubert Guyard, a councillor at the Parliament, whose family became marquis de Changey at the end of the 17th century.
The château was probably built between 1700 and 1750. The Guyard family kept it until 1923, more than two centuries. At the end of the 19th century a wing was added to the north to house the owner's carriages and staff. In 2019 the entire estate was listed as a historic monument, with its park, water network, avenue, walls and gates.
Architecture
The long main house has a chapel on its west side, with a rounded choir, and a round stair turret. A wing turns back to the east. Below, two ranges of outbuildings stand around two courtyards. The park has three parts: a formal garden to the south, a park with a grand perspective and kitchen garden to the north, and a wooded hillside to the west.
Visiting
Tips for your visit
The château is private and not open to visitors. You can see the estate from the lanes of Changey, north of Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton. It makes a pleasant detour on a drive through the Hautes-Côtes, between the vineyards of the Côte and the wooded hills behind them.
