About the château

Château de FuisséChâteau de FuisséChâteau de FuisséChâteau de Fuissé

In the heart of the village of Fuissé, in the Pouilly-Fuissé vineyards, stands a solid old house with a tower and a walled vineyard. It is the home of Château-Fuissé, owned by the same family since 1862. Today the estate covers about forty hectares of vines spread over more than a hundred plots.

History

The house has medieval origins, with a 15th-century tower and a Renaissance porch among its oldest features. In 1862 Claude Bulland, a farmer from neighbouring Vergisson who was looking for a farm to support his family, walked over to see a large building for sale in Fuissé. Though in poor condition, it had style, and beside it lay a walled vineyard of about 2.7 hectares.

Bulland took out a bank loan, a rare step at the time, to buy the estate. Hard years followed, with the war against Prussia in 1870 and then the phylloxera crisis. Five generations have since succeeded one another, from Claude Bulland to Antoine Vincent today, each adding to the family estate. The vineyard now covers about forty hectares divided into more than a hundred plots.

Architecture

Château-Fuissé is a village house of character rather than a grand château. Its most striking feature is a 15th-century tower, flanked by two yews clipped in the shape of wine bottles, together with a Renaissance porch. Beside the house lies Le Clos, a vineyard enclosed by dry-stone walls in the Burgundian way, facing south-east and planted with vines more than fifty years old.

Visiting

Tips for your visit

The estate receives visitors for sales and tastings by appointment only, so book ahead through the official website or by phone. The house itself is the family's home. Fuissé is a small village at the heart of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation, with the Rock of Solutré and many other cellars close by.
