About the restaurant
L'Auberge du Cep is a one-Michelin-star restaurant in Fleurie, one of the ten Beaujolais crus, about 1 hour 25 minutes from Beaune. Aurélien Merot and Camille Gomes reopened it at the end of 2015 and won back its star in 2021. Go for generous terroir cooking, fine sauces and the wines of the surrounding hills.
The story
The inn has been a landmark of Beaujolais cooking since at least 1951, and for some four decades it was the domain of Chantal Chagny, who made it one of the essential tables of the region. It lost its star in 2014.
Aurélien Merot, who had worked at Paul Bocuse's Brasserie du Nord, with Philippe Labbé at the Château de Bagnols and at the Chèvre d'Or in Èze, and later led the kitchen of the Château de Pizay, took over with Camille at the end of 2015. The star returned in the 2021 guide.
The cooking
Merot's cooking is rooted in the Beaujolais and in classic sauces, finished with finesse. Some dishes are served all year: a pâté en croûte with sweetbreads and foie gras, Bresse chicken cooked in Fleurie, a house signature since 1951, and a vanilla and Grand Marnier soufflé. Seasonal menus bring game in autumn, one menu honours Marguerite Chabert, the first woman in France to preside over a wine cooperative, and pairings draw on the crus around the village.

Tips for your visit
Fleurie is about 1 hour 25 minutes from Beaune by the A6. From Tuesday to Friday a market lunch menu costs €35 or €40. The other menus start at €67 for five courses, with others at €85, €98 and €120, and pairings of three or five glasses from €42. The restaurant opens from Tuesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner. It makes a natural finale to a day among the Beaujolais crus or in the southern Mâconnais, and with a private driver nobody has to drive home.
