About the place

Chalon's food market fills Place Saint-Vincent on Friday and Sunday mornings, in front of the cathedral. Stalls offer Bresse poultry, Charolais beef, cheeses, charcuterie, fruit, vegetables and wine. On Wednesday mornings another food market sets up on Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, and the tourist office describes the Saint-Vincent market as a true Chalon institution.

What you will see

Arrive mid-morning to see the square at its busiest. Look for Bresse chicken, snails, goat cheeses and seasonal produce from nearby farms, and for stands selling wines of the Côte Chalonnaise. Take a coffee on a terrace around the square and watch the town at work. The cathedral and its cloister are a few steps away, and the half-timbered houses make a fine backdrop for photographs.

History

Chalon lies where the Bresse plain, the Charolais pastures and the vineyards of Burgundy meet, and its markets have long brought all three together. Many stallholders are local producers selling direct. The setting adds to the pleasure: Place Saint-Vincent is lined with timber-framed houses, several protected as historic monuments, and overlooked by the former cathedral, begun in the late 11th century and recently restored.

Tips for your visit

The market runs on Friday and Sunday mornings, from 8:00 to 13:00, on Place Saint-Vincent and in the rue aux Fèvres, and on Wednesday mornings a food market is held on Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, near the Musée Denon. On Fridays a second market, without food, fills the place de Beaune and the place du Général-de-Gaulle, and on Thursdays a general market is held in the Stade district. Parking in the old centre is limited, so ask your driver to drop you close by. Bring a cool bag if you plan to buy cheese or charcuterie to take home. Check the tourist office website before you go, as arrangements can change around holidays.
