What you will see
Inside, the 144 wines of the current selection are arranged by colour and appellation, from the Aligoté of Bouzeron to the reds of Mercurey and Givry and the whites of Montagny, with Crémant for sparkle. The team offers commented tastings that walk you through the differences between villages. It makes a useful first stop before visiting estates, or a way to taste widely when time is short. Tastings come in four formats, from the Découverte de la Côte Chalonnaise, with three whites (a Bouzeron and premiers crus from Montagny and Rully) and two red premiers crus from Givry and Mercurey, to Les 7 Merveilles, which adds a Crémant and a third red. Every tasting comes with gougères, the small Comté choux of Burgundy, and a game on the aromas of wine.
History
The Maison des Vins was founded in 1982 as a non-profit association by the mayor of the time and a group of winegrowers, to raise the profile of all the appellations of the Côte Chalonnaise. Twice a year, more than 100 tasters, including winemakers, sommeliers, chefs and informed amateurs, blind-taste more than 350 samples. The 144 best-scoring wines are then offered for sale, one selection for spring and summer and another for autumn and winter.
