About the château

East of Dijon, in the village of Bressey-sur-Tille, stands an elegant château that grew in two stages. A house from the reign of Louis XIV was doubled in 1786 by a monumental façade inspired by Palladio. The château, its entrance pavilion, the gate on the avenue from Dijon and the park are classified historic monuments.

History

The château stands on the site of an old feudal castle. Bressey belonged first to its own lords and then to the Champlitte-Pontailler family, before passing in the mid-18th century to the Lemulier de Quercize family. In 1755 Jean-François Lemulier, an honorary councillor of the Parlement of Burgundy, made a first extension to the existing house, which already had a front in the style of Louis XIV.

In 1786 the château was doubled by a monumental new façade of Palladian inspiration. The estate archives keep the estimates and plans for this work, which identify the architect as Jean Caristie, of Milanese origin. In the Grand Salon, carved woodwork is by Jérôme Marlet, who had worked shortly before on the decoration of the Parlement of Burgundy. The château was classified in 1992.

Architecture

The château is rectangular and strictly classical. Its east front dates from the Louis XIV period, while the west front of 1786, inspired by Palladio, gives it a monumental look. The low slate roof is edged by a cornice with balustrades. The avenue from Dijon is framed by two pavilions, the orangery and the stables, in front of a large wrought-iron gate and the park wall.

Visiting

Tips for your visit

The château is privately owned and not open to visitors. It stands in Bressey-sur-Tille, about 10 km east of the centre of Dijon, and its entrance pavilions and gate on the avenue from Dijon give an idea of the estate. It fits well into a drive across the plain towards Arcelot or Fontaine-Française.
