About the château

Château de ChazouxChâteau de ChazouxChâteau de ChazouxChâteau de Chazoux

Chazoux lies at Hurigny, on the north-western edge of Mâcon, in the Mâconnais wine country. From outside it looks sober, but inside it keeps a complete suite of painted rooms from the 1880s. Its park, with belvederes and garden buildings, was designed by the Luizet family of Lyon, and the whole estate was listed in 2023.

History

The Chazoux wine estate took shape in the 18th century, and a château or master's house is recorded in 1809. From the 1880s the owners, Alphonse Michoud and his wife Thérèse de Boissieu, set out to redesign the estate. They kept the exterior sober but lavished attention on the interiors, calling on the workshop of the painter Victor Bussière for the salons and bedrooms.

In true 19th-century taste, each room evokes a different period: the Middle Ages, the Renaissance or the age of Louis XV. For the park the couple turned to Marc-Antoine II and Gabriel II Luizet, from a dynasty of Lyon horticulturists, who laid out wide curving paths, lawns and viewpoints. The whole estate, with its outbuildings, park and walls, was listed as a historic monument in 2023.

Architecture

The suite of reception rooms is remarkably well preserved. The small and large salons, painted by Victor Bussière in light Louis XV tones, lead to a Renaissance-style dining room with a beamed French-style ceiling and a neo-Gothic library with a monumental fireplace and furniture bearing the owners' arms. Corridors and stairs in pale wood picked out with coloured lines unify the house.
