About the place

The Cité des Climats et vins de Bourgogne is a network of three wine discovery centres, in Chablis, Beaune and Mâcon. The Mâcon site, on the banks of the Saône, focuses on the vineyards of southern Burgundy: the Mâconnais, the Côte Chalonnaise and the Couchois. An immersive visit route ends with a tasting.

What you will see

The visit route uses multimedia, scents and sounds to explain the landscape, the individual vineyard plots known as climats and the making of wine, and ends with a tasting. Children have their own route within the main one, with small hiding places to find, and finish with grape juice. The 17-metre tower is modelled on the screw of a wooden wine press; guided tours go up to its platform for a view over the Saône.

History

The project was conceived around 2010 by the Burgundy wine board, the BIVB, and launched officially in 2017. Work began on all three sites in 2021, and the Mâcon Cité opened on 3 May 2023, a few weeks before its sister sites in Chablis and Beaune. It extends the wine board's existing building, and its architects, RBC Architecture and ACL Associés, gave it curved forms inspired by the ammonite, a fossil common in the region's clay and limestone soils.
