About the château

Château de la CommaraineChâteau de la CommaraineChâteau de la CommaraineChâteau de la Commaraine

The Château de la Commaraine stands on the Grande Rue of Pommard, framed by corner towers and backed by its own walled vineyard, the Clos de la Commaraine. After a long restoration it reopened in 2026 as a hotel with restaurants, a spa and a working winery.

History

La Commaraine is an old noble estate. A description of Pommard written in 1782 records that it once belonged to the lords of Commarin and then to the Vienne family. Their arms, joined with those of Franche-Comté, were carved over the door with the motto Tout bien à Vienne. The same account praised the fine vaulted rooms and a carefully worked well in the entrance court.

In 1920 the estate was bought by Ulysse Georges Jaboulet-Vercherre, and it stayed with his family for nearly a century. In 2017 it was sold to Denise Dupré and Mark Nunnelly, who began a restoration lasting several years. The château reopened in 2026 as a hotel run by Champagne Hospitality, with 37 rooms and suites, two restaurants, a spa and a winery in use.

Architecture

The château is U-shaped, with a tower at each corner, set at the back of its plot. The north-west wing has a two-flight stone staircase and a balcony on the first floor. Towards the vines stand a square tower and a round one. The estate is walled, with gates on the street and one at the far end of the clos.

Visiting

Tips for your visit

The château is now a hotel. Guests can stay in the house and walk among the vines, and cellar visits and tastings are mainly offered to them. The two restaurants and the spa also welcome visitors who are not staying, by reservation, and the bar serves the estate's wines. It is a short walk from the centre of Pommard. Check the official website for opening times and booking.
