Stay in Beaune if the wine villages are the reason for your trip: Pommard is 5 km away, Meursault 9 km and Nuits-Saint-Georges 18 km, and on 1 January 2026 this town of 20,352 people had 38 hotels with 1,692 rooms. Choose Dijon, eight times larger, for city evenings and six MICHELIN-starred restaurants, or to explore the Côte de Nuits, which starts at its southern edge with Gevrey-Chambertin 13 km away. The two towns are about 45 km apart and 18 to 30 minutes by TER, so you can sleep in one and spend a day in the other.

Which is closer to the wine villages, Beaune or Dijon?

Beaune: it stands in the middle of the Côte, with the Côte de Beaune all around it and the Côte de Nuits 15 to 40 km to the north, while Dijon sits at the northern tip of the slope.

The vineyards form a strip of nearly 60 km from Dijon to the Maranges, listed by UNESCO in 2015 as the Climats of Burgundy together with both towns. From Beaune, the red-wine villages of Pommard and Volnay are 5 to 6 km away, and the villages of the great white wines, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, 9 to 16 km. From Dijon, the Côte de Nuits begins almost at once: Marsannay-la-Côte is 8 km away and Gevrey-Chambertin, the first village with grands crus, 13 km, but Meursault is 53 km away and Santenay 63 km. The table gives road distances from each town centre.

In practice, a stay in Beaune puts both Côtes within a short drive, which is why most wine days start there; a stay in Dijon puts the Côte de Nuits on your doorstep and the great white wines of the south 50 to 60 km away.

Is it easier to find a hotel in Beaune or in Dijon?

Beaune has almost as many hotels as Dijon for a population eight times smaller, so a small town offers plenty of choice, but it fills up on the big wine weekends.

What is there to do in the evening in Beaune and in Dijon?

Dijon, a city of about 162,000 people, has far more going on after dark; Beaune's evenings are quieter and centre on dinner in the walled old town, which you cross on foot in 10 to 15 minutes.

The 2026 MICHELIN Guide lists six starred restaurants in Dijon, among them the two-star William Frachot, and two in Beaune, Le Carmin and Clos du Cèdre, while Table de Levernois, Auprès du Clocher in Pommard and Le Charlemagne in Pernand-Vergelesses add three more within 10 km. The Opéra de Dijon plays its 2026-2027 season at the Auditorium while the Grand Théâtre is being renovated. The Cité internationale de la gastronomie et du vin, a 10-minute walk from Dijon-Ville station, opens every day, with its exhibitions open until 19.00 from October to April, and the permanent collections of Dijon's museums, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon among them, are free and open every day except Tuesday.

In Beaune, the Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices Civils de Beaune is open until 19.30 every day up to 15 November 2026, and the Marché aux Vins until 19.00 from April to November, so a late visit still fits before dinner. From 13 November 2026 to 5 January 2027, Lumières à Beaune projects free light shows onto the landmarks of the old town every evening.

How do you get between Dijon, Beaune and the villages without a car?

By TER between the two towns and to a few villages, by the Mobigo 113 coach through the Côte de Nuits, and on foot within each town; plan your evenings around the last trains.

  • Dijon and Beaune: about 44 TER trains a day from Dijon and 42 from Beaune, taking 18 to 30 minutes, from about €6. The last trains leave Dijon at about 22.10 and Beaune at about 22.00, so dinner in the other town has to end early.
  • Dijon and the Côte de Nuits: about 22 trains a day reach Gevrey-Chambertin, in 15 minutes on average, and about 23 reach Nuits-Saint-Georges, in 21 minutes, but Gevrey-Chambertin station lies about 2 km from the village.
  • Mobigo coach 113: from Dijon-Ville station through Marsannay-la-Côte, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges to Beaune station in about 1 h 10 to 1 h 25, several times a day from Monday to Saturday and twice each way on Sundays. On public holidays only the Sunday services run, and none on 1 May.
  • In town: Beaune station is about 1 km from the Hôtel-Dieu, and Dijon has two tram lines, T1 from the station to Quetigny and T2 from Chenôve to Valmy.
  • Taxis must be booked ahead, especially in the evening and on Sundays, and Uber drivers are rare around Beaune.

Which base suits a one-, two- or three-night stay?

For most wine trips, Beaune; Dijon is the better choice for a city break with one day in the Côte de Nuits, or for one night on arrival by TGV.

Can you stay in a wine village instead?

Yes: several châteaux and starred restaurants of the Côte take overnight guests, but evenings are quiet and every outing needs a car or a driver.

Transport is the trade-off. Only a few villages have a station, sometimes 500 m to 2 km from the centre, and the Mobigo coach stops on the main road below the villages.

  • Château de Cîteaux, Meursault: 35 rooms and suites in a 19th-century château above old monastic cellars, with a restaurant and a spa, 9 km from Beaune.
  • Château de la Commaraine, Pommard: a five-star hotel with 37 rooms and suites, two restaurants and a spa, reopened in 2026 after five years of restoration, 5 km from Beaune.
  • Hostellerie de Levernois: a Relais & Châteaux hotel in a seven-hectare park 5 km from the centre of Beaune, home to the starred Table de Levernois.
  • La Rôtisserie du Chambertin, Gevrey-Chambertin: a hotel with the Côte de Nuits' only starred table, La Table d'Hôte, 13 km from Dijon.
  • Château de la Berchère, near Nuits-Saint-Georges: 19 rooms, a pool and a park, a few minutes from the Clos de Vougeot.
  • Maison Lameloise, Chagny: the three-star restaurant has rooms on the town's main square, about 20 minutes south of Beaune.

When are rooms hardest to find?

On Beaune's big wine weekends, when the town fills up well ahead: book early, or stay in Dijon and travel down by train or with a driver.

  • 13 to 15 November 2026: the Hospices de Beaune weekend, with the 166th auction on Sunday 15 November at 14.30 under the market halls and the whole town celebrating from Friday (the auction weekend).
  • 17 and 18 October 2026: the Fête du Vin Bourru in Nuits-Saint-Georges, on the third weekend of October, which also brings Vignobles en Scène around Beaune.
  • 31 October to 11 November 2026: the Foire internationale et gastronomique de Dijon, one of France's oldest fairs, in its 96th edition.
  • 30 and 31 January 2027: the Saint-Vincent Tournante in Volnay, 6 km from Beaune, where entry needs a tasting kit bought in advance.
