About the château
The château of Rosey stands on a slope just south of the village of Rosey, a short drive from Givry. It is a refined house of 1767, approached by a long avenue of trees and framed by gardens in the French spirit. It is private, but its story is unusual.
History
From the 16th century the land of Rosey and the nearby provostship of Loisey were shared between two lords. In 1767, after a long and complex series of purchases, Antoine Clerguet became sole owner. He held the title of capitaine en chef du vol in the Grande Fauconnerie, the royal falconry of France. He built an elegant house at the place called Le Meix Loisey, perhaps inspired by the work of the Burgundian architect Émiland Gauthey.
Clerguet died without direct heirs, and in 1789 the château passed to Vincent-Mathias Villedieu de Torcy. He emigrated during the Revolution, and the estate was sold to Antoine-Denis Bottex, a court clerk in Chalon. Bottex pulled down the chapel and the library, two low wings with balustraded terraces. The Vitteaut family owned Rosey from 1819, and it has changed hands several times since.
Architecture
Rosey is a rectangular house with carefully balanced façades. On the north side a slight central projection holds a round-arched door between Tuscan pilasters, a wrought-iron balcony and an oval window under a curved pediment. The south front has a three-bay projection with round-arched openings and a pediment pierced by a round window. A courtyard with outbuildings lies to the north, with gardens to the south and east.
Visiting
Tips for your visit
The château is a private home and is not open to visitors, so please respect the owners' privacy. Rosey is close to Givry and Buxy, and the quiet lanes between them make a pleasant drive through the southern Côte Chalonnaise vineyards.
