About the château

Aloxe-Corton has three châteaux, and this is the least known. The Château de Corton stands in a large wooded park on the rue des Vercots, at the southern end of the village. It was built between 1885 and 1890 by the Dijon architect Charles Suisse and remains a private home.

History

Simon Gauthey bought the property around 1839. The land survey of 1825 shows a large rectangular house with farm buildings on both sides, including a barn, a winery and stables, arranged in a U. Over the following decades the Gauthey family enlarged the park by buying the neighbouring plots, including land in the Les Planchots and Les Genevrières areas around the house.

Between 1885 and 1890, Simon's son Alexis Henri Gauthey and his wife replaced the old house with the present château. They chose Charles Suisse, the Dijon architect who later restored the Château de La Rochepot for the Carnot family and who also designed interiors at the Château de Corabœuf. The initials HG, for Henri Gauthey, still appear on the pediment of the entrance front.

Architecture

The château is square in plan, with two projecting pavilions on the entrance front and a many-sided turret on the garden side. The ground floor is in dressed stone, and the upper floors are in brick with stone corners, a play of colours typical of the period. Slate roofs, arched ground-floor windows and a broad stone terrace with a glass canopy complete the house.

Tips for your visit

The Château de Corton is a private home and cannot be visited. You can see its gates and part of the park from the rue des Vercots. Pair it with Château Corton C and Château Corton Grancey for a short walk through the village, about 20 minutes on foot.
