About Chorey-lès-Beaune
Chorey-lès-Beaune lies about three kilometres north of Beaune, on the gentle ground at the foot of the slope, close to Aloxe-Corton and Savigny-lès-Beaune. It has no premier crus, but its supple reds and a growing share of whites make an excellent first step into Burgundy village wines.
The wines
Chorey-lès-Beaune has no premier crus. Its vines grow on marl and limestone alluvium over stony ground, washed down from the slope over thousands of years, with gravel towards Aloxe-Corton and clay and limestone towards Savigny. The dry, sandy subsoil suits the vine well. Reds from Pinot Noir are light, supple and fruity, with raspberry, cherry and blackberry. Whites from Chardonnay, still a small share, show white flowers, hazelnut and lemongrass.
History
Chorey has made quality wine since at least the 7th century, according to the Beaune tourist office. The church of Saint-Luc has origins in the 12th century. Nearby, a château rebuilt in the 17th century on the site of a medieval fortified house still keeps two towers, part of its water-filled moat and a garden bordered by vines. It is private property.
The Chorey-lès-Beaune appellation was created on 31 July 1937. Its vines stretch across the foot of the slope, close to Aloxe-Corton and Savigny-lès-Beaune. Red wine is the main production, with a small but growing share of white. In January 1995 the village hosted the Saint-Vincent Tournante, the winter festival in which a different Burgundy wine village each year opens its streets and cellars to visitors from the whole region.
What to see
Église Saint-Luc
The village church, with origins in the 12th century, stands among the old houses of Chorey. It makes a short stop between Beaune and the villages around the hill of Corton.
Cycling through the vines
The ground around Chorey is almost flat, so it is an easy ride for all levels. The Voie des Vignes cycle route from Beaune to Dijon passes close by, through Savigny-lès-Beaune and around the hill of Corton.
Tips for your visit
Chorey needs only 20 to 30 minutes. Pair it with Savigny-lès-Beaune and Aloxe-Corton on a short loop north of Beaune, or stop on the way back from the hill of Corton.
