About the château

Château de MalignyChâteau de MalignyChâteau de MalignyChâteau de Maligny

Maligny is a wine village on the river Serein, about seven kilometres north of Chablis. Its castle has a long feudal history, from medieval lords to a son of Henri IV. Today the name Château de Maligny is carried by the Chablis of the Durup family, who welcome visitors for tastings at their estate in the village.

History

The castle above the Serein is traditionally attributed to Hugues de Maligny, in the first half of the 12th century. Guy II de Maligny rebuilt and fortified it in the early 13th century. In the 14th century Gilles de Maligny defended it against troops serving Edward III of England. After 1482 it passed by marriage to the Ferrières family, and Jean II de Ferrières became a Protestant leader in the Wars of Religion.

In 1605 the crown seized Maligny and sold it to César de Vendôme, son of Henri IV. It later passed to the La Grange d'Arquien, Simiane, d'Aguesseau and other families. In modern times the Durup family, winegrowers for many generations, restored the vineyard of the Château de Maligny. After taking over his father's two hectares in 1968, Jean Durup bought steep, stony plots that others judged too hard to work.

Architecture

The castle was raised above the river Serein and strengthened in the early 13th century, when Maligny was a stronghold worth defending. Of the whole estate, it is the dovecote that is protected as a historic monument, listed since 1971. The castle remains a private home. Around the village, the Durup vineyards climb steep, stony slopes.
