About the château

Château Long-DepaquitChâteau Long-DepaquitChâteau Long-DepaquitChâteau Long-Depaquit

Château Long-Depaquit stands in the centre of Chablis, in a park of old trees and roses. It is the home of one of the great Chablis estates, with land in five of the seven grands crus and the monopole La Moutonne. Owned by the Beaune house Albert Bichot, it welcomes visitors all year in its Orangerie.

History

The estate's roots go back to the Cistercian monks of Pontigny Abbey, who owned vines in Chablis from 1128 until the French Revolution. In 1791, when church property was sold, the Depaquit brothers bought the abbey's ancient vineyards. The family later settled in an elegant 18th-century château in the heart of the town, which became the seat of the estate.

Since 1970 the estate has belonged to the Bichot family of Beaune, and its wines are made, matured and bottled in Chablis. When the Long-Depaquit heirs sold La Moutonne, four of them sold their shares to Bichot and one to Drouhin, but Bichot now controls the whole plot. A new, more environmentally friendly winery was built in 2014. Besides La Moutonne, the estate owns about ten hectares in five grands crus.

Architecture

The château is an elegant 18th-century house in its own park, planted with century-old trees and a rose garden, on the Rue Auxerroise in the centre of Chablis. The Orangerie in the grounds is used for visits and tastings. The winery, built in 2014, was designed to be kinder to the environment. The estate covers about 52 hectares of vines, farmed organically.
