About the event
Each autumn the Confrérie de la Truffe de Bourgogne de Noyers holds its truffle market on the Place du Marché au Blé. It is described as the largest market in Burgundy devoted to Tuber uncinatum, the Burgundy truffle, and the sale is part market, part village theatre. Winegrowers and local producers sell Burgundian specialities alongside.
What to expect
Each market has a patron, a figure from local or national life, who opens the sale by ringing a cowbell, the clarine. What follows is a joyful scramble for the best truffles. Around the sale there are inductions into the brotherhood, truffle-hunting demonstrations, a giant truffle omelette and stalls of wine and Burgundian produce.
History
The market has been held every year for more than twenty years. Before any truffle can be sold, commissioners check each one with a small knife, cutting into it to make sure it is firm and free of mould or worms.
The harvest varies widely from year to year. In October 2025, 13.6 kg of truffles were sold, and the second market planned for 30 November was cancelled because too few good truffles had been found.
