About the château
In the hamlet of Vantoux, about 8 km north of Dijon, stands a fine early 18th-century country house, among the most important of the Dijon area. It was rebuilt between 1699 and 1704 for Jean de Berbisey, first president of the Parlement of Burgundy. The château, its main courtyard, moats, wooded park and outbuildings are classified historic monuments.
History
A lordship and castle belonging to the Saix family are recorded at Vantoux from the 13th century. In 1699 Jean de Berbisey, first president of the Parlement of Dijon, the highest court of Burgundy, began a complete rebuilding of the château on the platform of the old fortified house. The work was finished in 1704, giving the estate the appearance it has today.
Berbisey had no children. In 1748 he left the château and his town house in Dijon to the office of first president of the Parlement, so that future holders could maintain the dignity of their position. For a time, Vantoux thus served as the country house of the heads of Burgundy's highest court. The château was classified in 1944 and its outbuildings in 1945.
Architecture
The château was built on the platform of the old fortified house, which still shows the traces of eight small rectangular corner towers. The early 18th-century house is compact and strongly massed, set behind a main courtyard and surrounded by moats. The large wooded park and the farmyard of the old estate still shape the layout of the hamlet of Vantoux.
