About the restaurant
Georges Blanc is a two-Michelin-star restaurant in Vonnas, a Bresse village in the Ain that the Blanc family has turned into a gourmet domain, about 1 hour 20 minutes from Beaune. Georges Blanc, Meilleur Ouvrier de France, still heads the kitchen, with his son Frédéric Blanc and Florent Maréchau as executive chefs. Go for the great classics of Bresse cooking and a cellar of some 140,000 bottles.
The story
The family story in Vonnas began in 1872, when Georges Blanc's great-grandparents opened a café. His grandmother Élisa Blanc, one of a line of celebrated women cooks, won the first star in 1929, and the house has held at least one ever since, the longest unbroken run in France.
Georges Blanc won the third star in 1981 and kept it until 2025, when the restaurant returned to two. Around it the family has built a gourmet village of some thirty restored buildings, with three hotels, a spa and gardens, and it also makes wine at its own estate in Azé, in the Mâconnais.
The cooking
This is classical cooking, built on sauces and on Bresse poultry, in dishes that have defined the house for generations: the Bresse poularde named after Élisa Blanc and the crêpe vonnassienne created by the Mère Blanc still stand beside newer seasonal plates of lobster, trout and pigeon. The cellar holds around 140,000 bottles, and a sommelier-chosen selection of three glasses is offered alongside the full pairings.
