About the place
In the hamlet of Fixey, next to Fixin, stands one of the oldest Romanesque churches of the Côte de Nuits. Its roof is covered with flat limestone slabs, and its bell tower wears the glazed tiles of Burgundy. It is a quiet stop on the way to Parc Noisot and its Napoleon monument.
What you will see
Walk around the outside first to see the roof of limestone slabs and the glazed tiles of the bell tower, a Burgundian signature. After renovation works completed around 2015, the church now opens its doors to visitors more regularly. The GR7 long-distance footpath passes right beside it, and Parc Noisot and its Napoleon monument are only a short distance away. The regional heritage inventory calls it the oldest Romanesque building of the Côte Dijonnaise. The nave is the oldest part, and the half-domed apse was added in 1720. Look closely at the two doorways: the lintel of the main door bears a flowered Greek cross, and the side door shows the tau cross of Saint Anthony. Inside, the nave has an open timber roof and round-arched windows. In 1976 two painted wooden statues then kept in the chapel, an 18th-century Saint Anthony and a 16th-century Virgin and Child, were registered as historic objects.
History
Fixey originally belonged to the abbey of Saint-Bénigne in Dijon. Local tradition dates a first oratory on this site, dedicated to Saint Anthony, to the year 902. The present church dates mainly from the 12th and 15th centuries. It has been classified as a historic monument since 2 May 1912, and it stands on the Route des Grands Crus, near the northern end of the Côte de Nuits.

Tips for your visit
Opening of the interior can vary, so ask the Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-Saint-Georges tourist office before you go. The exterior can be admired at any time. Fixey was a commune of its own until it joined Fixin in 1860, and the hamlet grew up along a single street. It also has an old bread oven, restored in 1974, where a festival each spring lets villagers bake their bread and cakes. Combine the church with Parc Noisot and a tasting in Fixin, whose premiers crus include La Perrière and Clos Napoléon. Check the official website for opening times.
