About the château
High on the slope above Fixin, the Manoir de la Perrière sits beside its walled vineyard, the Clos de la Perrière. Monks of Cîteaux ran it as a wine estate for almost 500 years. Its cellar still holds a lever press dated to the 14th and 17th centuries, one of the oldest in Burgundy.
History
According to the owners, the site began as a hunting lodge of the dukes of Burgundy. From 1142 to 1622 the manor belonged to the monks of Cîteaux Abbey, who made it a centre for their vineyards and also used it as a house of convalescence. They planted about five hectares of vines around it and enclosed them with walls. An inventory of 1622 already mentions the great press in the cellar.
After 1622 the manor passed to private owners and was altered many times, before a renovation in the early 20th century. In 1853 the Joliet family bought the whole clos, and seven generations have run it since. Today the Clos de la Perrière is a Fixin premier cru owned solely by the family, made in red from Pinot Noir and in white from Chardonnay.
Architecture
The manor grew from an older northern building, which the monks enlarged, and they dug the cellars beneath it. The cellar holds a lever press with taissons, heavy timbers driven into the ground, dated to the 14th and 17th centuries and classified as a historic monument in 2000. The manor, the remains of its gateways, the north building and a nearby well are listed.
