About the château

Château de ChamillyChâteau de ChamillyChâteau de ChamillyChâteau de Chamilly

The château of Chamilly lies in the narrow valley between Chagny and Aluze, on the northern edge of the Côte Chalonnaise. A horseshoe-shaped medieval tower stands beside a 17th-century classical house. The Desfontaine family, owners since the early 19th century, welcome wine lovers in the old château kitchens.

History

A fortified house surrounded by moats stood here by the end of the 13th century. In 1543 Claudine de Moroges, heiress of the lordship, married Jacques-Nicolas Bouton, whose family had risen in the service of the dukes of Burgundy. The couple founded the Bouton de Chamilly line. In 1644 the lordship was raised to a county to reward their grandson Nicolas Bouton, who had defended the town of Stenay.

Nicolas Bouton probably built the present house before his death in 1662. His son Noël Bouton, the heroic defender of the Dutch town of Grave, became known as the maréchal de Chamilly. In 1776 the estate passed by marriage to the Béthune family, and the last lord of Chamilly died on the scaffold in 1794. The Desfontaine family bought the château at the beginning of the 19th century.

Architecture

The oldest part is a horseshoe-shaped tower, perhaps the lowered remains of the medieval keep, roofed with flat tiles. It flanks a gatehouse joined to the 17th-century main house. The house follows a classical design, with walls that were once rendered and stone quoins framing the windows and corners. A bastioned wall, traces of the old moats and a square dovecote complete the ensemble.
