How far is Beaune from Geneva, Basel and Zurich?

By motorway, Beaune is about 2 h 45 from Geneva airport, about 3 hours from Basel and 3 h 30 to 4 hours from Zurich, depending on traffic; by train, Basel is the quickest of the three.

From Geneva you cross into France almost at once and follow the A40 and the A6. From Basel the A35 and then the A36 run past Mulhouse, Belfort and Besançon almost to Beaune; from Zurich you join the same road at Basel. In APRR's 2026 tariffs, French tolls for a car come to €27.50 from the Viry barrier near Geneva to Beaune Nord and €21.30 from Basel or Zurich.

Is there a direct train from Geneva to Beaune?

No. The TGV Lyria from Geneva runs to Paris through Bellegarde and Bourg-en-Bresse without stopping in Burgundy, so the trip to Beaune takes 3 h 30 at best and usually 4 hours or more, with changes at Lyon Part-Dieu or Mâcon.

From the Lausanne side there is another way: the TGV Lyria from Lausanne crosses the Jura through Vallorbe, Frasne and Dole to Dijon in about 2 h 15, three times a day, and a TER covers the last 20 minutes or so to Beaune. If you fly into Geneva with luggage, the car is simpler: the transfer from Geneva airport takes about 2 h 45 door to door.

How do you get from Basel or Zurich to Beaune by train?

Take a TGV Lyria to Dijon and change to a regional TER: SBB lists up to four direct trains a day from Basel SBB to Dijon in 1 h 24 and up to three from Zürich HB in 2 h 24, and trains, almost all of them TER, run from Dijon to Beaune about 44 times on a weekday, in 18 to 30 minutes.

Not every TGV Lyria between Zurich, Basel and Paris stops at Dijon: depending on the departure, some call at Belfort-Montbéliard TGV instead, and you change at Mulhouse. Allow 2 h 15 to 3 hours from Basel and 3 to 4 hours from Zurich, depending on the connection. Seat reservations are compulsory on TGV Lyria and included in the fare, and TGV Lyria advertises tickets between Switzerland and Dijon from CHF 49 or €49 in Standard class.

Beaune station is about 1 km from the Hôtel-Dieu, and many hotels in the wine villages lie 5 to 20 km out of town, so arrange the last few kilometres before you arrive.

What does a private transfer from Geneva, Basel or Zurich cost?

From Geneva Airport, a transfer to Beaune costs €570 per car for up to four guests, with tolls, flight tracking and waiting for delays included; the return is a second trip at the same price, so €1,140 for both ways.

Your driver meets you on the French sector of the airport. After an international flight, collect your bags, go through Swiss customs, go up to the check-in level and follow the France Sector signs; only passengers with a valid flight ticket for that day, give or take a day, can move between the two sectors, and you cannot cross on foot or by bicycle, so this transfer suits air travellers rather than a pickup in town.

From Basel or Zurich there is no published price: transfers are on request. Send your dates, your pickup address and the number of guests through the booking page; sending the request costs nothing, and your driver confirms by e-mail. You can also drive to Beaune, leave the car at your hotel and book only the wine days, which start and end at your hotel door.

What does a two-day wine weekend from a Beaune hotel look like?

Give Saturday to the Côte de Nuits with an 8-hour full day, €560 per car for up to four guests, and Sunday to Beaune on foot and the Côte de Beaune with a 4-hour half day, €290: €850 in all with the driver, with tastings paid directly to the domaines.

Many family domaines close on Sundays, which is why the domaine visits go on Saturday and the Hôtel-Dieu and the Marché aux Vins, open every day, on Sunday morning. For more ideas, see our wine tour itineraries and how tastings work in Burgundy.

What is the drink-driving limit in France?

In France it is illegal to drive with 0.5 g of alcohol or more per litre of blood, which equals 0.25 mg per litre of exhaled air; for new drivers on a probationary licence and in accompanied driving, the limit is 0.2 g per litre.

Between 0.5 and 0.8 g per litre, the penalty is a fine, usually €135, and the loss of 6 points, and the police can immobilise the car. A few tastings add up quickly, so the simplest plan is to leave your own car at the hotel: with a driver, everyone in the group can taste, and tolls, parking and waiting are included in the price.

How much wine can you bring back into Switzerland?

Each traveller aged 17 or over can bring 5 litres of drinks under 18% alcohol, wine included, and 1 litre of spirits over 18% into Switzerland free of duty each day; beyond that, duty is CHF 2 per litre of wine and CHF 15 per litre of spirits.

Swiss VAT is a separate test: once everything you carry is worth more than CHF 150 per person, VAT is due on the whole value, at 8.1% for wine. Two adults bringing home two cases of twelve 75 cl bottles, 18 litres, have 10 litres free: the other 8 litres cost CHF 16 in duty, plus VAT if their goods exceed the tax-free limit. The official QuickZoll app calculates the amount and lets you declare and pay before you cross, choosing a two-hour window for the crossing; you can also declare at the border with your receipts. Many domaines also ship wine, so ask when you buy.

When is the best time for a wine weekend in Burgundy?

Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant. The busiest weekend is the Hospices de Beaune wine auction, from 13 to 15 November 2026, when the whole town celebrates and rooms must be booked early, and in August many family domaines close for part of the month.

See when to visit Burgundy for the seasons, and the Vente des Vins des Hospices de Beaune for the auction weekend.
